Historic Hardman Farm to host traditional family expo Oct. 8
Inaugural event will feature women and men in period costumes

The Hardman Farm main house is an example of Italianate architecture, a style popular in the U.S. from around 1840 to the early 1870s. The historic home and its surrounding land will host a traditional family exposition Saturday, Oct. 8, at 143 Ga. 17 in Sautee Nacoochee.

While carnivals and fairs kick into high gear, the historic Hardman Farm is taking a step back in time with a traditional country fair.

The Nacoochee Valley Farm and Family Exposition will be from 9 a.m. to  5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at 143 Ga. 17 in Sautee Nacoochee. Admission is free. Parking cost $10 per car.

The festival will feature vendors dressed in period costumes, creating handmade Appalachian products such as baskets, brooms, pottery and more. Others exhibitors will teach visitors how to make candles, butter, pressed apple cider and pan for gold. Mules will be used to harvest corn in the field and antique tractors will be on display.

Visitors can also try their luck in the potato sack race or pumpkin toss. Game times are:

* Noon — Potato sack race

* 1 p.m. — Watermelon seed spitting contest

* 2 p.m. — 3-legged race

* 3 p.m. — Pumpkin toss

Once participates to the farm are finished looking at exhibits, they can sit down and snack on treats or each lunch while listening to mountain music. Performances will feature:

* Mountain Jam from 10 a.m. to noon

* Bob and Melody on the dulcimer from noon to 1 p.m.

* Debbie Rankin reading children’s stories from 1:30-2 p.m.

* Yonah Pickers from 2-3 p.m.

Plus, the big house will be open for self-guided tours of the first floor.

If you can’t make it to the exposition, then head to the Sautee Nacoochee site for Ghost Legends of the Valley from 7-9:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22. When there, storytellers will transport visitors to a realm of ghosts and creatures of the night.

Co-sponsored with the Sautee Nacoochee Community Association, the event offers guests an opportunity to experience two historic landscapes under a fall night sky. Three stories will be told about each site.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $8 for teens and $12 for members of Friends of Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites or SNCA. A small handling fee will be added for each ticket sold.

It is recommended for children ages 12 and older. Guests must be preregistered.
