Rumors of inappropriate behavior have swirled since the president of Riverside Military Academy abruptly resigned on Tuesday, May 8.
Britt Daniel, Riverside’s executive vice president, said Col. William Gallagher’s departure is a “private personnel matter” and was a “mutual decision” when asked to comment on Wednesday, May 9.
“Beyond that, I will only say this is not a matter involving anything criminal, nor anything involving a cadet” or staff, Daniel said.
Lt. Col. James Spivey will serve as interim president.
Gallagher was named president in June 2016. He succeeded Col. James H. Benson, who served as president from 2009 to 2016.
Daniel said a nationwide search will be conducted to hire Gallagher’s permanent replacement, but that he doesn’t expect this process to be complete prior to the start of the 2018 fall semester.
Riverside’s 111th commencement will be held Saturday, with 109 cadets receiving diplomas. The class of 2018 earned more than $3.7 million dollars in merit scholarships.
