Cuts Tuesday morning to a fiber optic cable between Clermont and Cleveland has caused a complete Internet outage at North Georgia College & State University in Dahlonega.
The cuts to an AT&T cable near its connection to Windstream's system were caused by construction activity, and service may not be restored until 6 p.m. today. Windstream provides Internet service to many North Georgia users.
The university has been working with the University System of Georgia's Peachnet system to resolve the issue with AT&T and Windstream. It is also making accommodations for students who participate in distance-learning systems and is extending the drop-add period and the fee payment deadline for the fall semester.
The university has maintained some connectivity through off-campus and emergency systems. Students, faculty and staff can still access email if they are off campus or using a mobile device with email capability.
