A Chestatee High School rising junior died Sunday night in an ATV accident in South Georgia, Hall County school officials said Monday.

Luke Martin, 16, died in the crash in Grady County, which is near the Florida-Georgia border.

Also injured was his brother, Tyler Martin, an eighth-grader at Chestatee  Academy of Inquiry and Talent Development.

Georgia State Patrol said Luke Martin was driving a 2010 Honda Rancher around 6:50 p.m. on Pierce Chapel Road. The ATV left the roadway and traveled down into a ditch, becoming airborne after striking a culvert, state patrol said.

“The ATV and the driver struck a tree while the passenger fell into a ditch,” state patrol wrote in an email.

Luke Martin was fatally injured, while Tyler Martin was transported to Archbold Hospital in Thomasville.

Luke had attended Sardis Enrichment School and Chestatee Academy of Inquiry and Talent Development. He spent two years with the Chestatee track and field team doing shot put and discus, adding “a spark” to the team at times, coach John Brimer said.

“He was a fun-loving kid,” Brimer said. “He kept spirits up for a lot of kids.”

Throws coach and world history teacher Jake Conley said he knew Luke as a bright kid who people naturally gravitated toward.

“Never a dull moment around Luke,” Conley said, adding that he was always seen with a smile. “He loved people, and people loved him.”

He was reportedly driving the ATV east of Cairo, the county seat, when the accident occurred.

A graveside service is set for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Chestatee Baptist Church Cemetery.

Little & Davenport Funeral Home of Gainesville is in charge of arrangements.
