A new upstairs lounge open to adults is giving customers a chance to mellow out at Mellow Mushroom.
Previously available for private events alone, the pizzeria opened its upstairs space — part venue, sports bar and lounge — to the public this year.
The top floor of the historic Green Street building serves as overflow seating for the main floor of the restaurant, but it’s also giving Gainesville diners something not often available in town: a 21-and-up experience.
Reservations for private events will continue through 2018, according to general manager Tim Cox, but beginning in 2019 the restaurant will open the upstairs section more often — especially over the weekend and during football season. It’s open on the weekends until close of business for the restaurant and has weekday hours as well.
The space seats about 45 people, has multiple TVs and comes with a private server. Mellow Mushroom has operated from the Green Street building since 2009. The structure itself dates back to 1915.
Mellow Mushroom’s lounge is just the latest to go public with a food-and-drinks space for adults in Gainesville. Avocado’s on the square turned an upstairs storage area into a craft cocktail lounge earlier this year.
The downtown mainstay opted into the more adult venue shortly after the city of Gainesville and developer Tim Knight rolled out plans for their Parkside on the Square condo and restaurant space on the fourth side of the square.Meanwhile, Scott’s Downtown has operated its lighter-menu lounge on Bradford Street for years.
