HOSCHTON — Eyes half open from exhaustion, 13-year-old Jackson Ramey pushed his way out from his desk in an early math class and tried to block out the loud klaxon bells ringing through the hallways of C.W. Davis Middle School one late August morning. It was a routine fire drill, but Ramey wasn’t happy to be interrupted from the warm-up problems he was working on. So after shuffling across school and onto the school’s football field, the seventh-grader huddled with a few friends, pulled out his phone and found a text from his dad, Hank.
