The Flowery Branch girls basketball team has not lost at Lanierland in five years, and that streak was not threatened Friday evening in the team's first-round matchup against West Hall. The Lady Spartans kept things close early, but the Lady Falcons started to pull away in the second quarter and never looked back en route to a 55-24 win.
West Hall had no answer for Flowery Branch forward Ashlee Locke, who scored 20 points on the day and added 11 rebounds to lead the way with a double-double for the Lady Falcons in the win.
Despite the lopsided final score, Flowery Branch struggled early in the game, misfiring on a number of occasions in the first quarter and managing only 5 points in the opening four minutes. But the Lady Falcons maintained a dominant presence defensively and started to find their stride scoring the basketball as the half wore on.
The offensive difficulties continued to start the second frame, but Flowery Branch closed the half out on a 12-0 run that spanned the final five minutes before the break to take a 27-9 halftime lead.
West Hall played the Lady Falcons a bit closer in the third quarter, staying even but never truly making up any ground. A 13-0 Flowery Branch run in the fourth put the game permanently out of reach.
The Lady Falcons will advance to play Lakeview Academy tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. at Johnson High School.
