Prep scoreboard: Lakeview advances to state quarterfinals

The Lakeview Academy girls tennis team keep their quest for a state title alive with a 3-0 win against Aquinas in the second round of the Class A State Tournament on Tuesday in Augusta.

Niki Patel earned a singles win for the Lions, winning 6-3, 6-2 over Aquinas’ Mary Elaine Gambill.

Lakeview locked up the win with two doubles wins from the teams of Molly Smith/Jackie Burleson and Paige Atherton/Nyari Chanakira.

Lakeview advances to the state quarterfinals when the Lady Lions play host to the Jefferson/Providence Christian winner on Tuesday, May 6.

BASEBALL

Flowery Branch 9, West Forsyth 5

Trailing 3-0, the Falcons scored six runs in the top of the sixth inning off a RBI double by Bucky Free, a two-run single by Danny Price and a three-run home run by Patrick Henry.

The Wolverines scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game, but Flowery Branch (22-2, 18-2 Region 7-AAA) countered with three runs of their own in the seventh inning to secure the win.

Mason Roberts picked up the win for the Falcons.

Flowery Branch visits North Hall at 7 p.m. today.

Lakeview Academy 9, Commerce 3

Colin King was 4-for-4 with a double and two RBIs and Brett Armour was 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs for the Lions on Tuesday in Gainesville.

Ralston Cash had two hits for Lakeview (16-7, 14-3 Region 8-A).

Angus Ferguson earned the win for the Lions with eight strikeouts.

Lakeview plays host to Athens Christian at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. Commerce (3-15, 3-13) plays host to Towns County at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Towns County 10, Jefferson 9

Towns County scored a go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning to hand Jefferson its first region loss on Tuesday in Hiawassee.

Jake Fields led the Dragons (17-4, 16-1 Region 8-A) at the plate with three hits, two runs and an RBI. Jed Gurley was 2-for-4 with was two runs and an RBI.

Jefferson wraps up their regular season when they visit Athens Academy at 5 p.m. Friday.
