High School Scoreboard: North Hall boys tennis team tops Eagles Landing, moves on to quarterfinals

North Hall's Dalton Patterson returns a shot in the No. 2 singles match Tuesday evening in McDonough.

The North Hall boys tennis program advanced to the state quarterfinals with a hard-fought 3-2 win against Eagle’s Landing in the second round of the Class AAAA state tournament Tuesday in McDonough. With the win, the Trojans will visit Cartersville in the state quarterfinals at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

In a match that saw many ebbs and flows, both teams split both singles and doubles action to set up a decisive fifth match at No. 3 singles. North Hall’s Reid Lattanzi topped Eagle’s Landing’s Roman Elmore in straight sets to clinch a place in the quarterfinals.

The Trojans got off to a quick start at No. 1 singles behind Jackson Davis. He beat Jessie Storr in straight sets (6-2, 6-3) to put the Trojans up 1-0 on the night.

In No. 1 doubles, Paxton Gillespie and Daniel Martin responded to win the final two sets to claim the match.

The Trojans claimed the victory with a gritty victory by Lattanzi at No. 3 singles. The North Hall player won the first set, and quickly reclaimed a 5-2 lead. Eagle’s Landing’s Elmore battled through a hand injury and cramps to win the next two sets to cut Lattanzi’s lead to 5-4.

Lattanzi prevailed in a competitive final game to win in straight sets.

RIVERSIDE MILITARY ADVANCES TO STATE QUARTERFINALS: Sipho Khoza, Sibu Khoza and Max Meehok won singles matches in straight sets for the Eagles in a 4-1 second-round win against Fitzgerald on Tuesday. With the win, Riverside Military moves on to face Greater Atlanta Christian in the state quarterfinals at 4:30 today in Gainesville.
