Union County girls (9-1) came out on top against Hokes Bluff (Ala.) 42-32 on Tuesday in the first round of the Battle of the States tournament in Hiawassee. Angie Hughes led the Lady Panthers with a game high 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Union County will play its second round game at 4 p.m. on Wednesday against Dawson County in Hiawassee.
SOUTHSIDE (Ala.) 57 BOYS, UNION COUNTY 50: Rhett McCombs scored 23 points for the Panthers (6-4) in their loss Tuesday at the Battle of the States at Towns County High. Freshman Tyler Odom also added 11 points.
Union County will play its second round game at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday against Murphy (N.C.) in Hiawassee.
DAWSON COUNTY BOYS 56, MURPHY 34: Tyler Dominy led all scorers for the Tigers (11-1) scoring 14 points their first game in the Battle of the States tournament Tuesday in Hiawassee. Camron Chester added 13 points while Bruce Clark finished the game 12 points.
Dawson County will play Southside High (Ala.) at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday in game two at the Battle of the States tournament.
BUFORD BOYS 63, WEST ANCHORAGE (ALASKA) 24: T.J. Shipes led the Wolves (8-1) scoring 19 points in their first game of the Converse Holiday Invitational tournament at Columbia High in Decatur. Kyle Kellam finished the game with 11 points. Buford will play at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday against an opponent still to be determined.
BUFORD GIRLS 49, GERMANTOWN (Pa.) 35: Mackenzie Darrah led the Lady Wolves (7-3) in their first win of the Peach State Jump Off Classic tournament on Tuesday at Holy Innocents. Kaela Davis and Kristina Nelson added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Buford will play at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday against Riverdale (Tenn.) in Atlanta.
