The Jefferson Dragons continued their wrestling dominance in the GHSA Class 3A-A Sectional on Saturday in Madison.
“(Our wrestlers) did wonderful,” Jefferson coach Doug Thurmond said. “We came in to sectionals with 13 of 14 weight classes and all were top four.
“That’s wonderful. Very, very pleased with our performance.”
All 13 Jefferson wrestlers that came to sectionals will qualify for state (top eight in sectionals).
Ian Statia (first in 106 lbs weight class), Dawson Bates (first in 113), Mitchell McGhee (first in 120), Cole Potts (second in 126), Tanner Thurmond (first in 132), Coy Strong (fourth in 138), Will Ballard (second in 152), Mason Corbett (fourth in 160), Chuck Allen (third in 170), Caleb Little (first in 182), Deshon Lester (first in 195), Jackson Bowen (fourth in 220) and Nick Holman (second in 185).
Other area schools that had wrestlers qualify for the state championships in 3A-A are Jackson County (10), Lumpkin County (10), Banks County (5), East Hall (4), Dawson County (3) and West Hall (3).
In Class 4A-A, Buford and North Hall both have 10 wrestlers going to state, Chestatee and White County have four and the lone qualifier for Johnson High was Jake Holman.
In 5A-A, Gainesville and Flowery Branch each qualified three wrestlers.
Habersham Central had two qualifiers in 6A-A and Riverside Military had three in Class 2A-A.
With sectionals complete, teams will have three days of practice before the state championships start on Thursday in Gwinnett at the Infinite Energy Arena, formerly known as the Arena at Gwinnett.
Thurmond knows there is still works to be done and says it will take a lot of “effort and pride” to finish off another season with multiple state champions.
