A woman who died as a result of a golf cart crash at a campaign event for U.S. Rep. Tom Graves has been identified as 45-year-old Beverly McDowell of Gainesville.

Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright said the Friday night crash in the Harbour Point subdivision remains under investigation, but preliminary findings are that the brakes on the 2010 Star golf cart failed.

Wright said 19-year-old Marilyn Rachel Graybeal was driving the cart during the crash.

A passenger in the cart at the time of the crash, 68-year-old Mark Marlowe, told The Times last week that the brakes went out on a steep hill in the subdivision, where an event was being held for Graves. The cart was shuttling Graves supporters to a home around 7:30 p.m.

Marlowe said Graybeal chose to sideswipe several parked cars in an effort to get the golf cart stopped rather than careen to the bottom of the hill. The golf cart spun and overturned, throwing out the occupants. Along with Marlowe, William Lumsden Morrison, 65, of Gainesville, and Ericka Ursla Pertierra, 42, of Stockbridge, were taken by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center where they were treated and later released.

Marlowe sustained a broken bone in his shoulder. McDowell, the most seriously injured, was airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center, where she was in critical condition for four days before succumbing on Monday.

Wright said Graybeal was injured but declined to be taken to the hospital by ambulance.
