Is there any word on a major grocery or drug store coming to the new shopping center on Dawsonville Highway?
Officials are not yet ready to announce what retailers are coming to the new shopping center, located across from Beechwood Boulevard off Dawsonville Highway. But Tim Knight of Knight Commercial Real Estate said they are in negotiations with a few, including a 70,000-square-foot retailer. The developer’s plans call for a total 246,000-square-foot center on the 15-acre property owned by America’s Home Place.
Knight said at least two other anchor stores are interested in the property.
“We’re just not ready to announce yet. We’re not quite that close,” he said. “We are moving down that road at a good clip, at a good speed and we feel very confident about it, but we’re just not at the point where we can really announce it yet.”
He said that announcement could come by this summer, though.
A final vote on rezoning the property to general business from residential and office/institutional is set for Tuesday.
A number of residents have voiced concern over the plans as the property backs up to the Lakeshore Heights subdivision.
Jim Walters, attorney for America’s Home Place, appealed to the Gainesville City Council at a meeting last week, asking for approval based on several factors, including that it would create 500 jobs.
