Authorities searching for two missing Dawson County men located two bodies Friday evening in the area of Fredrick’s Cove in Lake Lanier.

The Department of Natural Resources used sonar to pinpoint a couple of places to search and the Hall County Dive Team found the bodies and recovered them at about 5:30 p.m. from a depth of about 15-20 feet, according to Maj. Tony Wooten, Dawson County Sheriff’s spokesman.

Mason Cox and David Wood, both 20, seemingly vanished Jan. 2 after a night of fishing from a dock in the area of Fredericks Cove off Ga. 400.

The bodies will be sent to the crime lab to confirm the identifications. Wooten said there were no obvious signs of trauma.

According to their parents, the young men said they were headed out to go fishing about 3:30 a.m. and would return later to spend the day with their families.

Fishing poles were found at their homes, along with items including one of the men’s cellphone and wallet.

Agencies including the Georgia Bureau of Investigation had been investigating the disappearance and searching the area by ground and air.

Divers were unable to go into the lake until Friday due to extreme temperatures and nearly an inch of ice blanketing the cove.
