Gainesville’s thriving art community will once again converge on the downtown square for one weekend, displaying its finest works.

The 13th annual Art in the Square will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, and Sunday, Sept. 18.

More than 120 artists and artisans from across the Southeast will display original artworks including oil paintings, unique pottery, handmade jewelry and more. Guests can spend the day interacting with the artists, watching live demonstrations, listening to live music and purchase goods. Demonstrations include open-air painting, photography, drumming, belly dancing, bluegrass, flute and string ensembles and bagpipes.

Art in the Square is open to professional and amateur artists. No companies selling resale goods are accepted into the show. Only artists are allowed to exhibit on the square.

“I do hand-dyed clothing and fabric,” said Tina Rice, a textile artist who will sell her products on the square. “Primarily tie-dye, but also shibori, which is a Japanese dyeing technique.”

Rice said she has modern clothing and “upcycled” vintage clothing that she gives new life with color.

Other artists include Tom Chambers of Blairsville. He uses a combination of wood and acrylic paint to create works of art that look like naturally flowing branches. His designs are named Branching Out.

Fellow Artist Joseph Dowling repurposes items, from rusty metal garden stakes to repainted wall hanging planters, welcome signs, key hooks and bookends. Dowling and many other artists have been featured on Art in the Square’s Facebook page.

The show is judged, with cash awards given at the discretion of the judges, plus a Best of Show and categorical awards. Judging starts at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Awards will be announced 4 p.m. Saturday.

Rice, who is from Blue Ridge, said her favorite thing about Art in the Square is the venue.

“I love that it’s right in the square,” she said. “It’s such a great location.”

The event is held rain or shine. Animals are allowed on the square, but must be kept on a leash.
