The Gainesville Theatre Alliance is looking to heat up the stage at Gainesville State College.

The theater group will put on their production of William Shakespeare’s "A Midsummer Night’s Dream" at the college beginning Tuesday.

The show will run through April 23 in the Ed Cabell Theatre on the college’s Oakwood campus.

Shakespeare’s comedic play follows a cast of love-struck characters who take a late-night journey through the woods and fall prey to a love-potion wielding, mischievous fairy named Puck. The fairy turns their lives upside down briefly, but in the end, all is right in their world.

Several Hall County residents will be taking part in the production. Gainesville State freshman Joseph Harris will be taking on the role of Egeus; while Brenau University students Renee Hanna and Leah Marie Smith will be portraying Philostrate and Titania respectively.

Although the romantic comedy is full of pranks played at the expense of lovers, the alliance says their production — which was directed by Elisa Carlson — is still family-friendly with a G rating.

"I love the guidance and insight (Carlson) gave to help interpret the fairies in this production," said Emily Barnes, a Brenau senior playing the role of fairy Peaseblossom.

"Their attitude and carefree nature is a blast to play with."

The Alliance is a unique, joint venture between Brenau and Gainesville State. The academic theater program and semi-professional company has been performing since 1979.
