Some Gave All 5K Road Race

When: 3 p.m. Saturday

Where: Rafe Banks Park, 5831 Athens St., Lula

Tickets: $25

For the second year in a row, Lula residents are honoring the memory of their hometown hero with the Some Gave All 5K Road Race.

The race will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday in honor of the late Maj. Kevin M. Jenrette, who was killed in action on June 4, 2009, in Kapisa, Afghanistan.

Organizers picked the second Saturday in May for the race because that is when Jenrette, a Lula native, graduated from U.S. Army Ranger School in 1996.

The race begins and ends at Rafe Banks Park, 5831 Athens St., Lula.

Walkers and strollers are welcome in the 5K. There will also be a 1-mile "Freedom Run and Tot Trot."

Registration will be held from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the day of the race at Rafe park. The entry fee is $25 per person.

Awards will be given out for the overall male and female, overall male and female masters and the top three finishers in each of 15 different age groups.

Last year, racers came from all over Georgia, including from Atlanta, Milledgeville and Alpharetta.

In addition to the races, there will be a silent auction, children’s activities and a cookout.

A Georgia Army National Guard Patriot Hummer and an Army Black Hawk helicopter will be on display at the park throughout the festivities.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Georgia National Guard Family Support Foundation.
