Coaches and wrestlers alike hope that the third time will be a charm for the Area 7-AAA duals.

After snow and ice forced postponements of the event Friday and Saturday, they’re now against the clock to get the event completed today at West Forsyth High and the two state qualifiers solidified before the state duals this weekend in Macon.
Wrestling for the 13 area schools begins at 11 a.m. today at the school’s main gym.

The seeding stays the same as originally slated with No. 1 Gilmer, No. 2 West Forsyth (the defending Area champions), No. 3 Lumpkin County, No. 4 White County and No. 5 Flowery Branch (the Hall County champions) leading the way. Last year, Gilmer and West Forsyth were the two 7-AAA qualifiers to state.

To avoid violating the Georgia High Schools Association’s five-match limit for wrestlers in a given day, two modifications were set into place. First, only teams that reach the semifinals will be in contention for a top-four finish. Secondly, for teams not reaching the semifinals, they’ll have the opportunity to wrestle back for as high as a fifth-place finish.

Wrestling is not the only sport off track due to the winter weather. High school basketball gets back on track Tuesday with all games in the area part of region competition. In Region 7-AAA, Pickens visits Chestatee, Flowery Branch travels to Gainesville, West Hall visits Johnson, and White County travels to North Hall. In Region 8-AA, Oglethorpe County travels to Banks County, Union County visits Dawson County, and Riverside Military travels to Fannin County.

In Region 6-AA, Buford visits Greater Atlanta Christian, and Athens Academy goes to Commerce in Region 8-AA. Habersham Central visits Apalachee in Region 8-AAAA.

ATLANTA THRASHERS: The Thrashers have been one of the coldest teams in the NHL lately, losing 10 of their last 11. Atlanta broke a nine-game losing streak in overtime against the New York Rangers last Thursday, but turned around and lost 8-1 to the Washington Capitals on Saturday night.

This week, the Thrashers (19-19) face the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday night at Philips Arena. Atlanta has split the first two meetings against the Senators this season. On Thursday, the Thrashers play host to the Buffalo Sabres, then visit the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday.

ATLANTA HAWKS: The Hawks have been streaky lately, losing five of their last seven. Last week, Atlanta snapped a four-game losing streak with wins against the New Jersey Nets and Boston Celtics. However, Atlanta was crushed Saturday night against the Orlando Magic, 113-81.

This week, the Hawks (23-13) visit the Boston Celtics today, then play host to the Washington Wizards on Wednesday and then entertain the Phoenix Suns on Friday.
