High school tennis: Gainesville makes clean sweep for Region 8-6A championships

The Gainesville High girls celebrate claiming the Region 8-6A tennis championship Wednesday.

On Wednesday, Gainesville made a clean sweep of the Region 8-6A championships. 

The Lady Red Elephants took home the title with a win against Jackson County in the finals. 

At No. 1 doubles, Sarah Ellen Toms and Kate Willis won decisively, along with a convincing win by Grace Nguyen and Madilyn Dye at No. 2 doubles. 

Merci Rico pulled out a three-set victory to claim the win at No. 1 singles, which gave Gainesville the majority to win. 

Up next, Gainesville will face Lassiter in the first round of state at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Longwood Park. 

For the Gainesville boys, it will host Alpharetta in the first round next week.
