The Jefferson High wrestling team wasted no time in the Class AA East state sectionals Friday as 11 of its wrestlers qualified in Dublin for the traditional state finals next weekend.
Chase Piperato (106 pounds), Kyle Kashuba (113), Josh Harris (120), Tyler Marinelli (126), Isaac Kelly (132), Clay Richardson (138), Jack Dollar (145), Cain Finch (152), Jake Sherman (160) and Forrest Przybysz (182) all won both of their individual matches and grabbed a spot in the semifinals.
"That's great to be in such a good position and already qualified for state," Jefferson coach Doug Thurmond said. "They also want to finish strong to prepare for next weekend."
For the Dragons, Jace McColsky (170) and Carson Newman (195) both finished 1-1 in matches Friday, and need one more win today to qualify for the state championship meet next week at the Gwinnett Arena.
Meanwhile, Chestatee had three of eight wrestlers qualify for the championship Friday from the Class AAA East Sectionals at West Laurens High.
Jose Reyes-Lavallee (106), Taylor Wright (152) and Dylan Brock (195) all won both matches Friday. With a pair of pins, Brock now holds the War Eagles' single-season pin record at 31.
Bartolo Velasquez (113), Christian Zapatero (126), Cody Etris (138), Kyle Wesley (160) and Oscar Campos (171) all finished with one win and will wrestle again today to try and qualify for state.
Also in Class AAA, Andy Voss (132), Tyler Kratzer (138) and Cam Howell (220) all worked their way into the semifinals for North Hall with a pair of wins Friday.
Taylor Marett (106), Matt Joy (113) and Tyler Goss (120) split first-day matches for the Trojans.
East Hall's Carlos Negron (152) qualified for state in Class AA with two wins in Dublin. Edward Vergara (145), Tyler Thomas (182) and J.D. Holloway (285) all won once Friday for the Vikings.
In Class AAAA, Flowery Branch's Nick Lankford (132) won both his matches Friday in the Class AAAA East Sectionals in Loganville.
Ben Horton (120), Zach Winter (126), Caleb Murphy (138), Eli Bloomfield (160), Grant Simonds (195) and Keaton Coker (285) split their first two matches for the Falcons.
The top eight wrestlers from each sectional combine to form a 16-man bracket for the championship meet that opens Thursday in Duluth.
