High school swimming: Eagles, Lady Falcons earn county titles

The Riverside Military Academy boys and Flowery Branch girls walked away winners at this year’s Hall County Swimming Championships at Riverside Military Academy.

The Eagles (113 points) finished ahead of Flowery Branch (76) and Gainesville (52). Riverside picked up wins in two of the individual races and placed first in two of the three team relays. Flowery Branch’s girls made their way to victory winning four of the individual races.

Riverside Military’s Christopher Reed won the 500 freestyle and Matthew Gallaway won the 100 breaststroke. Tyler Perry, Luca Inghilleri, Gallaway and Brown won the 200 freestyle relay for the Eagles. Brown, Barrett Young, Ruppenthal and Inghilleri won the 400 freestyle relay for Riverside.

Second place finishers for Riverside included Gallaway in the 50 free, Young placed second in the 200 free, Eric Cochran finished second in the 500 free, Matthew Feist in the 100 backstroke, Perry in the 100 breastroke and Kenley Israel in the 100 butterfly. The Eagles also had three third place finishers.

Taylor Howard led the Flowery Branch girls with wins in the 200 intermediate (2 minutes, 34.75 seconds) and 100 breastroke (1:20.11). Holly Faul won the 500 freestyle for the Lady Falcons (7:35.6) and Savannah Bassett won the 100 backstroke (1:13.16). Megan Albini placed second in the 50 freestyle, Mackensie Cooper was second in the 200 freestyle and Emily Nichols finished second in the 500 freestyle for Flowery Branch. Flowery Branch also placed second in the 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay.

The North Hall girls dominated the relays winning all three events. Katie Brown, Hannah Towe, Janette Smitherman and Daniel won the 200 medley relay for the Lady Trojans. Smitherman, McMillan, Brown and Daniel placed first in the 200 freestyle relay for North Hall. Smith, Eades, Savanna Wardlaw and Kim Mistarz finished first in the 400 freestyle relay for the Trojans.

Chestatee’s Sarah Schwanke won the 50 free and 100 fly. In the girls’ 100 freestyle, Chestatee’s Crystal Martin finished first and Rebecca Plummer finished second. In the 200 freestyle, Smitherman finished first and Cooper finished second. North Hall’s Brown finished second in the 100 backstroke, Towe placed second in the 100 breaststroke and Smitherman was second in the 100 butterfly.

The Gainesville boys had two swimmers that won a pair of events each. Andrew Aubuchon won the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly for the Red Elephants. Gainesville’s Andy Doan won the 200 IM and 100 backstroke. Other boys winners were, Flowery Branch’s Pat Tracy in the 50 freestyle (24.32) and Chestatee’s Cory Hene won the 100 freestyle. Aubuchon, Doan, Summer and Summer won the 200 medley relay for the Red Elephants.

Flowery Branch relay teams finished second in the 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay.
