Senior striker Leo Toledo scored eight goals as the fourth-ranked Vikings defeated Jefferson 11-3 in the first round of the Class AAA state playoffs. Carlos Castrejon, Ruben Ramirez and Oskar Mejia also scored to lead East Hall into the second round, where the team will travel to Jackson High School on Wednesday.
RIVERSIDE MILITARY ACADEMY 10, MODEL 0: Samuel Palmer, Guillermo Cruz-Celis and Carlos Carrillo all scored twice, while Enio Xavier, Javier Carus and Adam Turner netted a goal to lead the Eagles to a rout over Model in the first round of the Class AA state playoffs.
Goalkeeper Robert Pee earned his eighth shutout of the season. Riverside will host Long County at home on at 5 p.m. on May 6 in the second round.
The Buford Wolves swept Heritage (Catoosa) in the opening round of the Class AAAA playoffs on Friday.
Jake Higginbotham (8-1) struck out 10 batters, gave up one hit and walked one in a 10-0 Game 1 victory. Connor Bennett (6-0) struck out 14 batters, gave up four hits, one earned run and walked one during seven innings of work in a 8-1 Game 2 win.
Buford scored nine runs in the first two innings to earn the first win, with Brandon Marsh (3-for-4) hitting a triple, a double and a single.
The Wolves then scored four runs in the top of the fifth in Game 2 to spark their second win of the day.
Marsh also led the way with a single, two RBIs and two stolen bases. Five different Buford batters had at least two RBIs in the Game 2 win.
The Gainesville Red team finished with a team score of 290, six shots behind Marist, after the first round of The Invite tournament at Chattahoochee Golf Course in Gainesville.
Spencer Ralston finished with a team-low 68, three shots behind leader David Mackey of North Oconee. Nathan Williams is tied for third with a first-round score of 69. Lawson King finished with 74 for Gainesville A, while North Hall’s Bartley Forrester is tied for 26th with 77. The Trojans are currently tied for seventh with Gainesville White team and St. Pius with a team score of 320.
