Gainesville golfers win Apple Mountain Invitational

The Gainesville boys golf team shot a 2-over 290 to defeat Peachtree Ridge by one stroke and win the Apple Mountain Invitational on Saturday at the Apple Mountain Golf Course in Clarkesville.

With two teams entered in the tournament, the Red Elephants’ tournament-winning red team was led Pep Brown’s 70. Lawson King shot a 72. Nathan Williams and Jackson Bishop each carded a 74.

Gainesville’s white team, which shot a 319 overall, was anchored by Spencer Ralston’s 75. Grant Lasseter carded a 79.

Gainesville competes in the Hall County Championships on Monday and Tuesday at Royal Lakes Golf Course.

GAINESVILLE GIRLS WIN TOURNEY: The Lady Red Elephants defeated second-place Brookwood by 13 strokes to finish first in the Lady Warrior Spring Swing on Saturday at Mossy Creek Golf Course in Cleveland.

Gainesville posted four scores in the 80s. Madeline Harr shot a third-place 83, followed by Meg Callahan at 85 and Morgan Reece at 88.

The Lady Red Elephants compete in the Hall County Championships on Monday and Tuesday at Royal Lakes Golf Course.


GAINESVILLE 6, HABERSHAM CENTRAL 0: Skyler Weber, Michael Gettys and Hunter Anglin each recorded two hits as the Red Elephants stayed unbeaten on the season Saturday in Mount Airy.

Gettys, Anglin and Luke Moore each drove in a run for Gainesville (6-0). Jonathan Gettys picked up the win with seven strikeouts and one hit allowed in five innings. Anglin struck out three in two innings of relief.

The Red Elephants visits Mountain View at 5:55 p.m. Monday.

WEST HALL 15, JOHNSON 5 (Friday): Cameron Johnson and Zach English each went 3 for 4 and combined for five RBIs as the Spartans rolled past their rival Friday in Oakwood.

Michael Cronic picked up the win on the mound for West Hall (3-2). His offense supported him with 11 hits on the night.

Johnson was led by Asher Griffith, who went 2 for 3. Joel Munoz drove in three runs for the Knights.

West Hall opens Region 7-AAA play when it hosts Dawson County on Monday.


NORTH HALL GIRLS 1, WHITE COUNTY 0 (OT): Alex Lawson buried a shot with 3:25 remaining in overtime to lead the Lady Trojans to a Northeast Georgia Mountains Cup title Saturday.

North Hall’s Alden Powell and White County’s Melody Driscoll each pitched shutouts in regulation.

North Hall visits Flowery Branch at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

WEST HALL GIRLS 4, CHESTATEE 1: Alyssa Hall, Marisol Escanuela, Katie Forrester and Gabrielle Ligas each scored to lead the Lady Spartans to a third-place finish in the Northeast Georgia Mountains Cup on Saturday.

Alyssa Hall, Kristen Newstrom and Julia Wunderlich each tallied assists for West Hall (4-2, 1-1 Region 7-AAA). Kyle Beaman made eight saves in goal.

Sadie Foote scored the lone goal for Chestatee.

The Lady Spartans visit Forsyth Central on Tuesday.

FLOWERY BRANCH BOYS 3, APALACHEE 1 (Friday): Chris Araya had a goal and an assist for the Falcons on Friday in Flowery Branch.

Nick Biasi and Justin Hetchevaria scored the second and third goals, respectively. Kevin Restrepo and Austin Higgs added assists for Flowery Branch (3-4-1, 2-0 Region 8-AAAAA).

Jonathan Beltran got the win in goal with 10 saves.

The Falcons play host to North Hall at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Flowery Branch.

WEST HALL BOYS 7, FANNIN COUNTY 0 (Friday): Cesar Villa and Sammy Coto each scored twice to lead the Spartans in their region home opener Friday in Oakwood.

Pedro Perez, Israel Guzman and Alejandro Zamora also scored for West Hall (7-0, 2-0 Region 7-AAA). Omar Castillo, Edwin Mendieta and Eduardo Magana recorded assists for the Spartans.

West Hall visits Forsyth Central on Tuesday.
