The Gainesville High baseball team earned an 8-4 Region 8-AAAAA victory at Clarke Central on Friday in Athens.
Harrison Styles threw six innings and allowed five hits to pick up the win, which improved the Red Elephants to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in region play.
Michael Curry had two hits, including a two-run home run, and Brandon Sewell went 3 for 4 with two RBIs for Gainesville. Banks Griffith tallied two singles.
The Red Elephants face Buford at 4 p.m. Saturday at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville.
The non-region contest at the Gwinnett Braves’ stadium features a pair of teams who played in their respective state semifinals in 2014.
EAST HALL 2, BANKS COUNTY 0: Jack Hagwood tossed a complete-game shutout for the Vikings on Friday in Gainesville. Hagwood allowed two hits while striking out five.
Hagwood also had two doubles and a single at the plate.
Levi Crocker’s two-run double in the first inning provided the contest’s only runs.
LOGANVILLE 6, FLOWERY BRANCH 2: Trey Groves had two hits and two RBIs in the Falcons’ loss.
Jonathan Hughes took the loss on the mound for Flowery Branch (7-2, 2-1 Region 8-AAAAA).
The Falcons will travel to Loganville on Monday for a game at 5:55 p.m.
NORTH OCONEE GIRLS 3, CHESTATEE 0: The Lady War Eagles dropped a Region 8-AAAA matchup Friday in Bogart, with a pair of early goals jump-starting the Lady Titans.
Chestatee fell to 3-2 in region play.
CHESTATEE BOYS 4, JOHNSON 1: Tyler Burgess, Reed Johnson and Austin Passmore picked up singles wins for the War Eagles (4-2, 3-2 Region 8-AAAA), who got a doubles victory from the Hasten Hayes/Logan Gruenenfelder pairing.
Johnson is 6-0 in singles and Burgess 5-1 on the season.
The Knights’ lone win came from the Alex Kimbrell/Asher Griffith doubles pairing.
JOHNSON GIRLS 4, CHESTATEE 1: Anslie Bass and Aly Groover earned singles triumphs for the Lady Knights, who swept doubles with the Kaitlin Houston/Jessica Wucinski and Sloane Sengson/Lydia Connally pairings prevailing.
Grace Brown secured the only win for the Lady War Eagles (2-4, 2-3) in singles, improving to 5-1 this season.
GAINESVILLE BOYS 5, CEDAR SHOALS 0: Jeffery Kiser, Graham McKinnon and Jackson Fox collected singles victories for the Red Elephants on Friday at Longwood Park in Gainesville, with the doubles pairings of Reagan Williams/Trevor Munn and Thomas Carter/David Davenport also winning.
The Gainesville tennis teams play Clarke Central on Monday at East Athens Park.
GAINESVILLE GIRLS 5, CEDAR SHOALS 0: Madison Kiser, Haley Frankum and Leita Williams prevailed in singles for the Lady Red Elephants on Friday at Longwood Park in Gainesville, and the doubles pairings of Georgia Summer/Katherine Wright and Paige Ackerman/Ali Waggoner also secured victories.
The Chestatee boys golf team won two tournaments this week.
The War Eagles shot a 182 to beat out Lanier’s 196 at Chattahoochee Golf Club on Wednesday. That came a day after Chestatee had a 191 and defeated West Hall, which finished with a 201, at Chicopee Woods Golf Course.
The War Eagles’ Clint Poole was low medalist with a 39 on Wednesday, and Matthew Pruitt was low medalist with a 42 on Tuesday.
