High school scoreboard: Buford wins region playoff opener

Class AA’s top-ranked Buford High softball team opened the Region 6-AA tournament with a 5-2 win against Greater Atlanta Christian on Thursday in Norcross.

Melissa Dickie struck out six hitters en route to her 12th win of the season for the Lady Wolves (25-2-1).

Alysha Rudnik led Buford hitters with a double and a walk. Samantha Ramey was 2-for-3 with two runs, Brandi Hellemn added two more runs and Karly Fullem added a hit for the Lady Wolves.

Buford continues the region tournament against Blessed Trinity at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at GAC.

VOLLEYBALL

Chestatee earns region win

The Lady War Eagles picked up a region win against Pickens (25-13, 25-17) on Thursday in Gainesville.

Ali Burnette led Chestatee (15-9, 6-3 Area 7-AAA) with five kills, four digs and three aces. Jessica Porter had 17 digs and Madisen Yates added five kills.

Chestatee plays host to West Forsyth and East Hall at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Gainesville drops two region games

The Lady Red Elephants lost to West Forsyth (25-7, 25-10) and Johnson (25-13, 25-16) on Thursday in Oakwood.

Taylor Ricketts led Gainesville (5-22, 1-9 Area 7-AAA) with 12 kills, 11 digs, six assists and two aces. Kiki Thompson had nine digs, three assists and three kills, and Loren Thomas added 13 assists.

Gainesville faces West Hall and Creekview at 5 p.m Tuesdsay at West Hall. Johnson plays host to Buford and Madison County at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

North Hall falls to Gwinnett teams

The Lady Trojans lost to Collins Hill (25-22, 18-25, 25-20) and Brookwood (25-20, 25-19) on Thursday in Suwanee.

Katherine Filchak had 11 kills, five blocks and two aces for North Hall (17-15, 7-3 Area 7-AAA). Kathryn Bell had 34 assists, and Kelsey Marlatt had 31 digs, two assists and two kills for the Lady Trojans. Evann Rowland had 16 kills, 30 digs and three aces, and Sarita Madera had 23 digs for North Hall.

North Hall faces Flowery Branch and Shiloh at 6 p.m. Thursday at Flowery Branch.

North Georgia Christian sweeps

The Lady Chargers shut out Horizon Christian (25-8, 25-22, 25-16) on Thursday.

Hannah Parker had 10 kills and Katherine Dunlap had nine aces for North Georgia Christian.

North Georgia Christian next visits Barrow County Christian.
