The Jefferson High boys and girls track and field program claimed the Region 8-AAA championship Saturday. The Dragons’ boys won with 177.5 points, ahead of second-place Oconee County (158) and Elbert County (92). The Jefferson girls won with 168, ahead of Morgan County (96) and Hart County (89.5).

Dalton Hill won for Jefferson in the 300 meter hurdles (42.96 seconds). Luke Wells took the title in the high jump (6 feet) for the Dragons. In the pole vault, Jefferson’s Taylor Jones won in a tiebreaker with his teammate Kayne Berryhill at 13-0.

Also for the Dragons’ boys, Donte Wilson won the discus at 141-10.

Jackson County’s Todd Woodring won the 400 with a time of 49.13.

For the Jefferson girls, Tashauna Smith won the 400 (59.29), Mariah Starks won the 100 hurdles (16.44), Taylor Love won the 300 hurdles (46.97) and also the 400-meter relay team took first place.

Baseball
JEFFERSON SWEEPS DOUBLEHEADER: The Jefferson High baseball team defeated Elbert County 7-3 and 13-3 to sweep a doubleheader on Friday in Jefferson.

The Dragons (20-4, 15-3, Region 8-AAA) will host Lumpkin County in a first-round series starting Friday.

Ethan Garner earned the pitching victory in the first game, going six innings and allowing one earned run on three hits with seven strikeouts and four walks.

Taylor Wilkes (two RBIs), Hunter Thompson and Christian Hutch had two hits apiece in the opener of the doubleheader.

Jake Franklin took the win in the second game, pitching four innings and allowing three earned runs on three hits and a walk with six strikeouts.
