The Gainesville High boys golf program got better as the afternoon went along, paced by team-low scores of 75 by Ryan Hogan and Drew Lasseter, and won the Region 8-AAAAAA championship (305) by 20 shots over second-place Habersham Central on Monday at the Chattahoochee Golf Club in Gainesville.

A state qualifier event in the past, it will now be an Area 2 Class AAAAAA tournament combined with Region 3-AAAAAAA on May 3 at Chattahoochee to see who qualifies for one of the four team spots to the championship meet. Region 3-AAAAAA includes Augusta-area schools with strong golf programs, including Lakeside-Evans, Greenbrier, Evans and Grovetown.

“It’s nice to win region,” said the junior Hogan, who was 2-under on his final 12 holes of the day. “It’s nice to get another win since we’re trying to get ready for the other big events still to come.”

Lanier’s Jackson Cross was low-medallist with a 2-over par 74.

Also counting toward Gainesville’s team score was a 77 by A.D. Winston and Hunter Worley’s 78.

After a 5 over on the first six holes, Hogan’s strong finish included birdies on 2, 5 and 15. On No. 5, Hogan knocked down a sweeping putt with about a 10-foot break from about 25 feet for birdie.

“I’m proud of the way I was able to finish today,” said Hogan.

Red Elephants coach Bryson Worley was equally proud of Lasseter for playing a solid round ‘without a lot of mistakes.’

The Gainesville High boys golf program now has 39 region titles in school history.
