What’s old hat for Buford is new territory for Flowery Branch.
Yet both are headed to the state football semifinals after playoff victories Friday night.
The Falcons advanced in Class AAA with a 35-17 victory over Baldwin in Milledgeville.
Senior running back Daniel Drummond scored three touchdowns in the second half and junior quarterback Connor Shaw rushed for two scores for the Falcons (11-2), who reached the semifinals for the first time.
"This team played so inspired tonight," Falcons coach Lee Shaw said. "I asked the seniors what kind of legacy they wanted to leave, and they just responded by playing with so much heart."
Flowery Branch will play at LaGrange next Friday. The winner earns a berth in the state championship game at the Georgia Dome the following weekend.
Top-ranked Buford moved on in Class AA with a 44-10 win over Dublin.
The Wolves will play host to Fitzgerald next Friday, their seventh trip to the semifinals this decade.
"We started in January with one thing on our mind, and that was another state championship," Buford running back Cody Getz said.
Gainesville’s playoff run ended in a 28-14 loss to Carver in Columbus.
