WINDER — Flowery Branch is taking things one tournament at a time.
And so far, that has led the Lady Falcons to unprecedented success.
Kierra Knight and Maddie Hetzel combined for 32 points to lead Flowery Branch (27-1) to a wire-to-wire 57-48 victory over Loganville in Saturday’s Region 8-AAAAA girls basketball championship game and earn its first region title in program history.
The Lady Falcons have won all four of the tournaments they’ve played in so far this season and expect themselves to flex their muscle as a No. 1 seed in next week’s Class AAAAA state playoffs.
“This is an awesome feeling,” said first-year Lady Falcons coach Courtney Newton, who played for Flowery Branch during her high school career. “I just have so much pride for this school, to this team, we all do. We wanted this from Day 1.”
Four Falcons combined for 21 second-quarter points as Flowery Branch shot out to a commanding lead and never looked back. For the first time in school history, the Lady Falcons will enter as a top seed in the playoffs. Flowery Branch’s senior class has made the playoffs three of the last four years, but has never seen beyond the first round.
Knight (16 points), a senior, said this team has the firepower to make history.
“We’ve definitely got a lot of confidence coming from this,” said Knight. “We’re ready for whatever’s coming at us.”
Fellow senior Maddie Hetzel buried four of Flowery Branch’s seven 3-pointers, including two during a 10-0 run to begin the second quarter.
Breanna Locke, who has been sidelined with an eye injury since late December, got her first start in just under two months, scoring seven points on three buckets in the paint.
The Lady Falcons shot out to a 10-2 lead to begin the contest, led by 17 points at halftime, and held a 21-point advantage with seconds left in the third quarter.
Flowery Branch topped Heritage and Winder-Barrow in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively, to reach the 8-AAAAA championship game.
“We’ve entered four tournaments so far this season and won all four,” said Newton, who has led the Lady Falcons to their most successful season in program history, including their first Lanierland title since 2003. “They believe in themselves. They have a hunger in their eyes. This is tournament season. There’s a little more intensity and pride when we get to this point, because anyone can beat anyone at this point.”
Flowery Branch’s Taniyah Worth (8 points) and Julianne Sutton (8 points) both made the 8-AAAAA All-Region team, alongside Gainesville’s Shikiya Brown and Taylor Hawks.
Loganville (19-8) opened up a 12-0 run to cut into the Falcons lead, but it was merely window dressing on an emphatic Flowery Branch victory.
“What’s special about this team is that there’s not just one player to key on, and everyone can step up,” said Knight. “The teams we’ve played so far tonight have been really tough, and it’s going to get tougher.”
Daijah Cousins led her team with 18 points, while Audrey Zumsteg chipped in 15 for Loganville.
The Falcons are riding an 11-game winning streak dating back to Jan. 8, when they suffered their lone loss of the season against Gainesville.
The Red Devils, who were on an eight-game win streak of their own, will now play as a No. 2 seed in next week’s state playoffs.
