High school softball: Flowery Branch moves on in Class 4A playoffs after sweeping first-round doubleheader
No. 2 seeded Lady Falcons got solid pitching from Kimbrell on Friday night
A yellow softball silently rests in the dirt.

The Flowery Branch High softball team advanced in the Class 4A tournament after sweeping Northwest Whitfield in a first-round doubleheader on Friday night in Flowery Branch.

The No. 2 seeded Lady Falcons went the distance in Game 1, eventually getting a clutch RBI-single from freshman Avery Thomas in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift Flowery Branch to a 2-1 win. Starting pitcher Alyssa Kimbrell showed great stamina in the 3-plus hour affair, giving up no earned runs in her complete-game performance from inside the circle.

The Lady Falcons held on for a 5-3 victory in Game 2. Senior Valerie Eder was the winning pitcher for Flowery Branch. She held Northwest Whitfield to three runs before Kimbrell entered in the fourth-inning to get the save.

Flowery Branch (15-12) next visits No. 1 seed Madison County for a second-round doubleheader on Tuesday at a time to be determined.
