Zander Sechrist and Andrew Armstrong each threw complete games for the Flowery Branch High baseball team as it swept top-seeded Veterans 3-0 and 3-1 in the Class 5A state quarterfinals on Wednesday in Kathleen.
With the win, the third-seeded Falcons advanced to the state semifinals for the first time in school history and will visit No. 2 seed Buford for another best-of-three series, starting with a doubleheader Tuesday at Gerald McQuaig Field.
“They came a long way,” Flowery Branch coach Joey Ray said. “They had some struggles earlier this season, but they kept working. I’m proud of them and our assistant coaches and parents that helped us get here.”
Game times for the semifinal series are still to be determined.
In the quarterfinal sweep, AJ Gonzalez had a two-run homer for the Falcons in Game 1. Armstrong finished with seven strikeouts and allowed two hits and a pair of walks from the mound.
In the nightcap, Sechrist allowed three hits with two strikeouts for the Falcons. Grant Lackey connected on a two-run double for Flowery Branch.
BUFORD SWEEPS: Buford’s Brandon Joliff had two home runs in Game 1 of the Wolves’ Class 5A quarterfinal doubleheader against second-seeded Ola, which they swept with wins of 8-2 and 10-2 on Wednesday in Buford.
Evan Place added another home run for Buford. Ramsey David threw four strikeouts for the Wolves, while teammate Noah Ledford had two RBIs. Austin Turner added an RBI for Buford.
In Game 2, Sean Adams got the win from the mound with five strikeouts for Buford. Ledford had three RBIs for the Wolves, while teammate Garrison Price contributed two RBIs. Place added another RBI for Buford.
