Wright State scored six unearned runs in the fourth inning and went on to defeat No. 1 Georgia, 8-5, Tuesday at Foley Field. Georgia (19-3) had its five-game winning streak snapped and lost for the first time in 15 home games this season. Rich Poythress hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first and Georgia maintained a 2-0 lead until the fourth when Wright State (10-12) took advantage of an error, a balk and two walks, and scored seven times to take a five-run lead.
Bryce Massanari homered for the second straight game to cut the lead to 7-4 in the sixth, and another home run by Adam Fuller made it 7-5. The Raiders answered with a run in the seventh, and Georgia had runners on second and third in the bottom of the inning, but the Wright State got out of the jam with a fielder’s choice and a double play.
Poythress, Massanari and Fuller had two hits apiece to lead Georgia. Poythress also walked and scored twice.
Chase Hawkins (2-1) allowed four runs, only one earned, on four hits in 3.1 innings to take the loss.
Tyler Newhart (1-0) worked 5.2 innings and gave up five runs on five hits to earn the win for Wright State. Michael Schum tossed the final 2.2 innings to pick up his third save.
The Bulldogs travel to Atlanta to face third-ranked Georgia Tech Wednesday at 7 p.m. on CSS. Jason Leaver (2-0, 5.93) will get the start for Georgia.
