The Durham Bulls defeated the Gwinnett Braves 4-2 in the series opener Monday night at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville.
Led by designated Barbaro Canizares (2-for-2, RBI), the G-Braves managed eight hits, but were unable to capitalize, leaving 16 runners on base.
Scott Proctor’s third relief appearance for Gwinnett (3-2) went awry in the seventh inning when he surrendered four earned runs on four hits, giving Durham the 4-2 lead.
Johnny Venters made his first start of the season for the G-Braves, yielding two hits and no runs in 4 2/3 innings.
Michael Dunn relieved him, striking out four batters in 1 1/3 innings. Craig Kimbrel entered in the ninth inning and struck out a pair.
Canizares now has hits in each of the last four games. Third baseman Wes Timmons went 2-for-4 for Gwinnett, and shortstop Brandon Hicks went 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Angel Chavez led Durham, going 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Joe Dillon went 2-for-5 with two RBIs.
