The Buford High softball team’s decade-long state championship streak is in peril.
The Lady Wolves dropped into the loser’s bracket of the Class 5A state championship tournament with a 6-5 loss to Locust Grove High on Thursday in Columbus. Now Buford (25-4) must win three games today, starting against Union Grove at noon, and three more Saturday if the team hopes to claim its 11th straight state title.
Locust Grove seized control of the back-and-forth game with a solo home run in the first inning before Arielle Oda ripped a two-RBI single the following frame. Kelsey Bennett’s solo home run put the Lady Wolves ahead 3-1 in the third inning.
Three lead changes occurred between the fifth and sixth innings, with Bennett and Janelle Mathis providing run-scoring doubles to keep Buford in the game. But Locust Grove took the lead for good with a two-run homer, though the Lady Wolves threatened with two runners in scoring position in the final inning.
