Before they became two of the most well-known women in Gainesville, Carol Burrell and Jackie Wallace were friends growing up near Winder.

Burrell shared stories about her friendship with Wallace, retiring president of United Way of Hall County, at the United Way’s annual banquet Thursday.

“Jackie and I have a unique connection,” said Burrell, president and chief executive officer of Northeast Georgia Health System. “Not only were we friends, but we wrestled underneath the basketball goal in middle school. We were both the tallest girls in our class, and we’ve been thought of as sisters on occasion.”

Burrell said she and Wallace were friends through high school and reconnected again as adults in Gainesville.

“I think Jackie would agree it’s been our mutual pleasure as girls from rural Barrow County to watch each other grow and flourish in our respective fields, as we both serve this great community that we now call home,” she said. “We’ve come a long way from those days in Winder-Barrow High School, roaming those halls and wondering what we were going to do to make a difference.”
