A Gainesville woman has been charged with aggravated assault in a Saturday night fight with her husband, said Gainesville police Lt. Brian P. Kelly.

Amber Ferguson, 40, and Sam Harben, 45, were arguing at their home in the 400 block of Dixon Drive when she got a knife from the kitchen and tried to attack Harben, Kelly said.

Harben told police that in grabbing the knife in self-defense, he cut his right hand. He also said that his wife prevented him from reporting the incident by disconnecting the phone line from the wall, Kelly said.

The incident took place at 10:18 p.m.

Ferguson also has been charged with battery and interference with an emergency call, Kelly said.

The aggravated assault and battery charges were filed under the Family Violence Act.

Harben received treatment for his injuries from paramedics who responded to the scene.
