A man who was detained in the stabbing of a Flowery Branch man acted in self-defense, authorities said Wednesday.

Jerry Grant, 32, was involved in a fight in the 5400 block of Cool Springs Road about 7 p.m. Tuesday, Hall County Sheriff’s Col. Jeff Strickland said. Grant and 37-year-old Delany Eugene Vandyke were fighting when Grant stabbed Vandyke in the upper abdomen, Strickland said.

Vandkye was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where he was in serious but stable condition Wednesday.

Grant was taken into custody by sheriff’s officials. He was released after a Hall County Magistrate Judge reviewed evidence and witness statements and declined to issue an arrest warrant, Strickland said.

"The preliminary investigation indicates that the actions of Grant appear to be in self-defense," Strickland said.
