A man was shot and killed Monday evening in the parking lot outside the Peppers Market off E.E. Butler Parkway in Gainesville.
Adiren Lamont Thompson, 37, of Gainesville was shot in the midabdomen and was unresponsive when he was taken by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center about 6 p.m., Cpl. Joe Britte, with the Gainesville Police Department, said. Thompson was pronounced dead about an hour later. Britte said Thompson was shot possibly three times.
Joseph Scott Williams, 32, of Gainesville was charged with murder in the incident as well as possession of a gun during the commission of a crime and possession of a gun by a convicted felon.
Gainesville and Hall County authorities searched the area around the 240 Atlanta St. convenience store following the shooting. The suspect was picked up at about 9 p.m., Britte said.
Britte said he wasn’t sure what led to the shooting between the two men.
“Right now it’s still an open investigation,” he said. He believes there was some type of argument before the shots were fired.
Mohammed Islam, manager at Peppers, said he heard five or six gunshots from inside the convenience store.
“I was taking care of customer,” he said in a thick accent. “Then somebody told me somebody got shot out there. And I went outside, and he laying down on the floor.”
Police rolled out crime scene tape as dozens of bystanders watched, talking with each other.
Bystanders in the apartments near the market said they were inside their homes when it happened and didn’t see anything. Bystanders closer to the market also said they didn’t see what happened.
