The National Weather Service advises North Georgia drivers to get an early start to their holiday travels.
Forecaster Shirley Lamback of the National Weather Service's Peachtree City office said precipitation is expected tonight and could be a mix of rain and snow, especially in the mountains, and is likely to produce slick spots.
Temperatures are expected to be in the lower 30s.
For much of North Georgia, the mix should turn to all snow by about noon on Christmas Day, Lamback said. The chance of snow Saturday is 70 percent.
With temperatures dropping to the mid-20s Saturday night, Lamback said there could be some accumulation.
"In Hall County, we could see 1 to 2 inches at the most," she said.
Some flurries are expected Sunday morning, with temperatures expected to get to about 39 during the day, she said. Temperatures will fall into the low 20s at night, she said.
"There's a chance that what falls and accumulates, if there's any kind of melting on Sunday, will freeze Sunday night," she said.
While no numbers have been recorded for Gainesville, the National Weather Service says the last time Athens saw snowfall on Christmas Day was in 1993, when less than an inch of snow fell.
The most Christmas snowfall on record in Georgia was 1.6 inches in Atlanta in 1881.
The weather service advises anyone with travel plans this holiday weekend to closely monitor later forecasts regarding the potential for accumulating snow.
