A Salvadoran man was killed in Sunday’s hit-and-run on Atlanta Highway, police said.

Edwin Omar Velasquez-Galeas, 25, was identified by Gainesville Police Tuesday, April 24, as the victim.

“From all accounts, it sounds like he had recently just gotten here. We’re not sure if he was elsewhere in the U.S., but his family said he is from El Salvador,” Sgt. Kevin Holbrook said.

Velasquez-Galeas’ family is traveling from El Salvador to Georgia to bring him home.

A car struck and killed Velasquez-Galeas Sunday, April 22, on Atlanta Highway and drove away toward downtown Gainesville, police said.

Officers were dispatched around 11:45 p.m. Sunday to 1750 Atlanta Highway.

“A passerby observed the victim on (the) side of the roadway and called police,” Holbrook said.

Police believe the car involved was a full-size Chevrolet pickup or SUV made between 1999 and 2005, and the suspect drove toward the city near the Beaulieu of America plant.

“The vehicle should have front-end damage, specifically to the passenger side area,” Holbrook said.

Investigators ask anyone with information to call 911 or 770-535-5163, particularly those who may have witnessed the crash or saw the vehicle between 10 p.m. and midnight near Atlanta Highway and Memorial Park Drive.
