Rabid raccoon located in Buford

A rabid raccoon recently made contact with two dogs in the 2300 block of Council Lane in Buford, the sixth confirmed rabies case this year.

Hall County Animal Control learned Wednesday that the raccoon tested positive for rabies. The raccoon was shipped to the Georgia Public Health Lab-Virology Section in Decatur.

Positive alert signs will be posted in the area where the rabid raccoon was located. People in the area who notice an animal acting strangely are advised to call Hall County Animal Services at 770-531-6830 or Hall County Dispatch at 770-536-8812 during non-working hours.

Hall County is encouraging pet owners to vaccinate their animals for rabies. The Hall County Animal Shelter offers vaccines for $10 Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 1688 Barber Road in Gainesville.
