A probable cause hearing is set for later this month after a Gainesville man made his first appearance Tuesday in Hall County Magistrate Court on murder charges.

Joseph Scott Williams, 32, is accused of shooting to death Adiren Lamont Thompson, 37, of Gainesville on Monday evening in the parking lot outside the Peppers Market on Atlanta Street off E.E. Butler Parkway in Gainesville.

Williams is also charged with possession of a gun during the commission of a crime and possession of a gun by a convicted felon.

Because of the nature of the charges, Williams is not eligible for bond unless set by a Superior Court judge.

Williams requested a probable cause hearing, which is scheduled for June 28.

He also requested representation from the public defender’s office.

Thompson was shot in the midabdomen and was unresponsive when he was taken by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center about 6 p.m., said Cpl. Joe Britte with the Gainesville Police Department. Thompson was pronounced dead about an hour later.

Police have not released any motive in the incident.

Williams carries a record of criminal charges that include possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute, theft and criminal trespass.
