A Buford man charged with beating his father to death with a crowbar picked up new charges for allegedly punching an officer in the face, police said.

Joseph Allen Cook, 40, was arrested Wednesday and charged in the death of his father Larry Cook, 68. Joseph Cook remains at the Gwinnett County Jail.

An officer was taking off Joseph Cook’s handcuffs when the suspect allegedly “turned around and punched her in the face in an unprovoked attack,” Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Michele Pihera wrote in a news release. The officer suffered a broken nose.

“She immediately withdrew from the room while the two other detectives physically restrained him on the ground until additional officers came to assist,” Pihera wrote.

Joseph Cook has been charged with aggravated battery against a law enforcement officer and felony obstruction of a law enforcement officer.

According to the Department of Corrections, Joseph Cook is on parole after being released from prison Jan. 27.

He had a 20-year sentence on an aggravated assault charge in October 2013 in Troup County, police said.

According to the State Board of Pardons and Paroles, most inmates eligible for parole consideration are eligible after one-third of the prison sentence has been served.

Police responded to a domestic dispute called in by Larry Cook after 6 p.m. Wednesday at 5605 Bridle Glen Drive in Buford.

A neighbor also called 911, telling authorities that a man was beating another man in the driveway, police said.

Joseph Cook was also charged with aggravated assault.
