The 17-year-old who drowned Saturday at Burton Mill Park in South Hall County was Quavante Combs of Lawrenceville.

He was pronounced dead at 6:53 p.m. Saturday at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Hall County Deputy Coroner John Abernathy said Sunday.

Combs had tried to swim across a cove and went under, according to David Kimbrell, Hall County fire chief and emergency management director.

After receiving the call around 5:20 p.m., Hall County Fire's marine rescue unit arrived and began an underwater search for the victim. He was found during a second sweep of the area.

Crews attempted to revive the teen on the scene but were unsuccessful.

The incident was the only one reported on Lake Lanier by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources to start the holiday weekend.

On Saturday, the DNR reported two drownings and one fatal boating accident statewide. There were 11 boating incidents overall during the holiday weekend and 24 cases of boating under the influence.

Lake Lanier has had three cases of boating under the influence and two minor boating incidents without injuries.

The only other activity in Northeast Georgia was a boating incident on Lake Hartwell Sunday where a female swimmer was hit in the head by a jet ski and required stitches.
