Oakwood gives first OK to child care center on Ga. 53

Oakwood City Council gave its first OK Monday night to a proposed child care center on Winder Highway (Ga. 53).

Council members did so, however, with the condition that the center doesn’t conflict with earlier commitments made to the Kroger shopping center near completion across the street.

The shopping center could feature restaurants, and there was some concern among council members that distance requirements regarding alcohol might hurt restaurant development.

Councilman Montie Robinson voted against the proposed annexation and rezoning of the three-acre site, which will feature a Discovery Point center.

"I’ve got to know for certain if there is any problem with the (shopping center) bringing in a restaurant," he said.

Councilman Gary Anderson, who made the motion with the condition, said he believed a staff study of the matter would show no distance issues.

"But I can’t see that from here," Robinson said.

The matter will come up for a final vote at a later meeting.
