It still doesn’t have a name, but the planned consolidated college in North Georgia has a mission statement just waiting on approval from the state Board of Regents.According to Bonita Jacobs, president of North Georgia College & State University and head of the implementation committee for the institution that will be formed by North Georgia and Gainesville State College, the mission statement has gone through the campus-level review and awaits review and approval by the Regents. That, she said, will likely happen during next month’s Regents meeting May 8-9.“It was actually a wonderful process to watch because the core values between the two institutions are so similar,” Jacobs said. “So, when we talked about student excellence and students achieving their best, those kind of things were so ingrained into the two institutions that they became kind of a focal point to start talking about who we were going to be.”Exactly what the mission statement says, though, is under wraps until it is approved.“One of the things we’ve been emphasizing over and over again is, while our admission standards may be different, our academic standards are the same,” said Martha Nesbitt, Gainesville State president. “We know our students have the same academic standards because we are the largest feeder to North Georgia or even to the University of Georgia.”She said the state chancellor assured her Gainesville’s campus would keep its access institution mission. That mission, Nesbitt said, hinges on three things: affordability, broad admissions policies and location.North Georgia, she said, is “very interested in retaining its selectivity.”Also under wraps is a list of names being considered for the new university.Officials say they will submit three preferred names to the regents, who will make the final decision. But the students have their opinions. Some say the institution should bear the North Georgia name, while others say the name is of no consequence.“We were talking about what we think it should be called and we tossed around North Georgia College or North Georgia University instead of NGC&SU,” said Harrison Ulmer, a North Georgia senior.
