The entrance ramp to Interstate 985 north from Mundy Mill Road in Oakwood opened Thursday, two days ahead of schedule, Georgia Department of Transportation officials said.

The ramp had been closed since Oct. 15 as part of the $75 million reconstruction project under way at the interstate.

"Congestion in the area will be greatly reduced (as result of the opening). We look forward to seeing even more congestion reduced as this project finishes," DOT District Engineer Russell McMurry said.

He urged motorists to be careful in using the new ramp, which is "much longer than the old one and looks completely different."

The exit ramp to Atlanta Highway remains under construction, McMurry said.

"Please don’t be distracted. Remember, it is still an active work zone," he cautioned motorists.

The overall project, which includes the widening of Mundy Mill and Atlanta Highway and a new interchange at Atlanta Highway, is ahead of schedule.

The completion date is now Dec. 31 instead of February 2010.
