Oakwood City Council has approved ornamental street lights for Thurmon Tanner Parkway’s final stretch, which is set for a December completion.

The city has accepted a proposal from Jackson EMC to install 84 lights, including the pole and a 250-watt light, at a cost of $58,800. The monthly operational cost is expected to be $1,470.

The Georgia Department of Transportation is building the four-lane road between Plainview and Mundy Mill roads, a $9.1 million project.

Thurmon Tanner has been built in four links. When completed, the four-lane parkway will run between Atlanta Highway at Exit 17 to Phil Niekro Boulevard in Flowery Branch.

Teri Pope, spokeswoman in the DOT’s Gainesville office, said the last phase of the project is behind schedule because of rain and wet conditions.

The DOT plans to work “with the contractor to help them catch up as weather improves,” she said.
