You may wake up to a wintry mix of rain, snow and sleet this morning, but the morning commute shouldn’t be a problem as temperatures are expected to remain well above freezing throughout Northeast Georgia.

But tonight and Wednesday could be a different story as temperatures drop into the 20s, and black ice could present problems for motorists.

Today’s forecast for Gainesville calls for mostly rain during the day, although the National Weather Service said some light sleet could be mixed in. The high temperature will be 43 degrees.

The rain should end in the early evening hours, weather service officials said. But with temperatures in Gainesville dropping to 26 degrees overnight, some roads and overpasses may become icy.

Any ice shouldn’t last long, though. Wednesday’s high temperature will be in the low 40s.

North of Gainesville, weather service officials say snow is likely to fall today and tonight, with accumulations of up to 1 inch possible. A winter weather advisory has been issued for Towns, Union, Dawson, Lumpkin and White counties. A winter weather advisory means periods of snow could make travel difficult.

Throughout the region, tonight and Wednesday will be breezy, with gusts between 30 and 40 mph possible.

Wednesday and Thursday will be mostly sunny but cold with daytime temperatures in the low 40s and overnight temperatures in the 20s.

And Friday brings another chance for snow.
