Homeless man accused of trying to kidnap 5-year-old
Tuan Van Nguyen

A 35-year-old man is accused of grabbing a young girl from a taxi after her mother refused to give the man a ride.

Tuan Van Nguyen, who told Gainesville Police he is homeless, was arrested Saturday, April 14, shortly after police responded to a 7 p.m. call about an attempted kidnapping in the 400 block of Atlanta Highway.

The taxi driver reported the man was acting oddly and asked for a ride to Oakwood, according to a news release from police. When she declined, the man grabbed the 5-year-old girl, whose father got out of the taxi and “forcefully” took the child back, according to police. Sgt. Kevin Holbrook said Sunday that the girl was not injured.

Police say Nguyen ran off, but he was quickly arrested nearby.

Nguyen is charged with criminal attempt to commit kidnapping and obstruction of an officer after police say he refused commands and fled.

He was transported first to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville for a medical evaluation due to his erratic behavior and then to the Hall County Jail.
